About the Course

The target audience includes licensed medical professionals that are interested in providing medical-forensic examinations to patients reporting sexual assault/battery. The training provides evidence-based material in a classroom setting with intermittent group didactic sessions including speculum skills, evidence collection methods, injury photo-documentation, and packaging of evidentiary items. The training is 48 hours, which includes 8 hours of self-learning to allow for a full day of live case study application.

Does the Course Meet the IAFN's SANE Education Guidelines?

Per the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN),

 ●" A minimum of 40 hours of didactic coursework that yields a minimum of 40 continuing nursing education contact hours from an accredited provider of nursing education, or academic credit or the national equivalent from an accredited educational institution; and 

● Clinical components, including simulated clinical experiences, that are completed in addition to the coursework and are not calculated as a part of the 40-hour didactic course. "

How Do I Earn My Continuing Education Hours?

You will earn two separate certificates that will total 48 hours. The first certificate will cover the 40 hour didactic portion of the course. The initial 8 hours that are included with this certificate will be completed via self-study. This self-study MUST be completed before the live class. See the sections below for the required education. The final 8 hour certificate will be provided for the hands-on portion of the course. All hours will be provided by Sarasota Memorial Hospital upon completion of the course evaluation. You will be emailed a pre-course material log that must be completed and turned in on the first day of class.

Will I be eligible to become SANE Certified After I Complete This Course?

This course meets all of the classroom criteria to be eligible to take the SANE-A board certification exam. Please see the guidelines for clinical requirements and competency validation, which are also necessary to become board-eligible. Click the link below to find out everything about becoming a board-certified SANE. Please note that IAFN is pausing certifications during its restructuring process. Board certification is not required to practice as a SANE-trained nurse.
